you see
The September
4th edition of the
Quincy Patriot Ledger newspaper? There was a story
and a photo about the Big Dig work winding down, and the impact this
is going to have on the Eastern Massachusetts construction industry.

you're interested in reviewing the picture (of Mike Guarino
& Ron Nesbitt) and/or the story.

UPDATE! 9/7/04: Did
you know?
The History
Channel is running a four part (total of four hours of
viewing) series titled "Modern Marvels: Building a
Skyscraper." It is categorized as "The Skeleton" (including
the rebar & structural steel) and "The Exterior" (which deals with
the curtainwall system); "The Human Environment" and "The Arteries."
It is a great educational experience and it airs next this evening
(Tuesday, September 7, 2004) from 7 PM to 11 PM, but I'm
sure that it will be repeated periodically, if you don't catch it
tonight, so keep your eyes peeled for it as it is well
worth it. The Cal-Trans building they are erecting is being
performed by our brothers and sisters from Locals 416 & 433 in Los
Angeles, CA.

UPDATE!
9/2/04:
Click here to view the Vermont
Ironworkers PIG ROAST on Saturday, August 28th at Leddy
Park in Burlington, VT. Over the past two years, we have come to the
realization that some of the finest ironworkers in New England
reside in Vermont. Our ongoing organizing efforts in this area were
enhanced recently when Dave Kaczynski of Local 474
was hired full-time to work with the District Council. The pig roast
was an opportunity for ironworkers from throughout the council to
jump on their Harleys and make the trip North to meet the existing
union members as well as other qualified people who are considering
joining our organization. Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle
(who's running for Governor) and United States Congressman, and
longtime organized labor advocate, Bernie Sanders
addressed the crowd with some powerful remarks. Several other
elected officials also took the time out to join us, and it was a
wonderful day for everyone who participated.

UPDATE!
9/1/04: Click
here to
visit a website of renowned photographer Michael Hintlian,
whose new book, Digging - The Workers of Boston's Big DIg,
has just been published. The book of black & white photgraphs, cherry-picked
from the tens of thousands of pictures shot by Michael on
various Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel job sites over the past
eight years, clearly illustrates the extraordinary work our members
(many of whom are prominently featured!) and their counterparts from
the building trades performed on the largest construction project in
the history of our great country. The book includes a forward by
Fred Salvucci, who dreamed up the concept of
depressing the artery underground to reconnect the City of Boston on
the back of a used envelope. I was proud to have been asked to
provide my feelings on Michael's work, and my comments are
prominently displayed on the back cover of the book. NOTE:
to visit the website of the book's publisher,
Commonwealth Editions - Books of New England. The book retails
for $34.95, and we wish Michael nothing but complete success, as he
is truly worthy and deserving of it.

UPDATE!
9/1/04: Click
here to view the recent dedication of the
"Fallen Member" memorial in the parking lot of Local 7 in South
Boston. Designed by architect Don Tellalian, who
also designed Local 7's state-of-the-art training facility. Click
here for a pictorial tour of that
training facility and union hall). Three structural steel
columns - two upright, and one, "fallen" column in between, but
supported by the other two - sit atop an enscripted granite base.
The granite and concrete composite base is designed so that as the
steel weathers, the rust "weeps," providing an ever-changing shade
of color to the adjacent concrete without inflicting any damage
to the granite. The subliminal representation is: two members
"weeping" for the third, "fallen" member. Thanks go out to
Father Ed Boyle of the Labor Guild for providing some
moving thoughts and a sacred blessing upon the grounds and the
memorial during the dedication. Also present were Mary
"Brownie" and Bernie "Moon" MacInnis,
whose son Chris was killed during the erection of a
project at the Mass General Hospital; and Linda
Bandecchi, whose son Michael was killed
during the erection of the Millennium project in Downtown
Boston.

UPDATE!
9/1/04:
to view the work of Local 7
Ironworkers, who rose to the task of erecting a 50% mock-up of the
Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC in Veteran's Park ("M" Street
Park) in South Boston. Having been fortunate enough to have visited
the actual memorial on many occasions, I couldn't believe how
remarkable the resemblance was to the real thing. Thanks go out to
the group who brought this to South Boston. They travel around the
country giving ordinary citizens an opportunity they might not
otherwise have to view this famous memorial. Additional thanks are
in order to the Local 7 members (some of whom bravely served in
VIetnam during the war) for rising to the task when they were called
upon.
