Do you spend your hard-earned money at WAL-MART?

(This is an E-mail I received from brother Mike Blackburn)

Jay:  We all know what bastards they (WAL-MART) are, but please keep hammering away at them. It wouldn't hurt to have this on the web site. Our members have to be continually informed......and unfortunately, embarrassed by their peers, if that's what it takes to keep our union families from using short term economics into a global disaster, i.e. sweat shops in every nation in the world, leading to American plants shutting down, because they can't compete, leading to job loss, health plans, pension plans, safety in the work place, union organizing circumvented, etc..........Why...?  Because we want to pay a little less for a pair of underwear.     YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET ...AND IT DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN WHAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR POCKET.

Fraternally, and with warm regards,
E. Michael Blackburn
I. W. Local # 15 Hartford , CT
Book # 701463

AN EXCERPT FROM THE STORY MIKE FORWARDED TO THE COUNCIL OFFICE: "...Wal-Mart also exploits taxpayers, for it is what Ronald Reagan would denounce as the leading corporate welfare queen. It’s estimated that Wal-Mart’s government subsidies total a whopping $2.7 billion, or $2,100 per employee.  An internal memo to the board leaked recently reported that “our [health care] coverage is expensive for low-income families, and Wal-Mart has a significant percentage of associates and their children on public assistance."  In fact, nearly one-half of the children of Wal-Mart employees are either on Medicaid or have no insurance at all. ..."

Ladies & Gentlemen, Boys & Girls,
Welcome to Fenway Park!

Stearns Company and Local 7 performing major overhaul on Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox...

The J.F. Stearns Company and Local 7 members are performing still another major overhaul of historic Fenway Park during this off-season period. The end result will be about 2,000 new seats and new luxury boxes (and the elimination of the "600 Club" - which Local 7 members proudly built in the 80's), but the road has not been easy. Members had to be trained or updated on lead paint abatement and the use of respirators required "fit tests," etc., all of which is illustrated in the accompanying slideshow.

 MEDICARE - PART D

Answers to ease Part D concerns

The new prescription drug benefit is the biggest change to Medicare -- the government health program for those over 65 and people with disabilities -- since it was created in 1965. The added benefit will change the way about 30 million Americans pay for their medications. It is also one of the most confusing government plans ever launched. Here are some of the basics:

The BOSTON GLOBE ran an informative section about Medicare Part D in today's edition. If you know anyone who may be interested in this information, please notify them of this posting or MAKE A COPY FOR THEM so they can read and/or refer to it.

Local 7 Hosts Annual BLOOD BANK
at Mass General Hospital...

Thanks go out to all of the Local 7 members who took the time to give blood today at the world-renowned Mass General Hospital. We would be remiss were we not to mention that this institution has been one of the largest employers of ironworkers in the past forty years through the many projects that have sprouted up on their campus. We sneaked a camera in to give you a first hand view of today's action.

PLEASE NOTE: If you didn't give blood today, please make an effort to get by and donate in the next few weeks. Don't wait til a family member, friend, or loved one needs it, as there are plenty of wonderful people who already find themselves in that position.

Local 37 members attend appropriate behavior class...

Local 37 members took the time to sit through Dr. Elaine Cadigan's Appropriate Behavior Class at their union hall and training facility. Dr. Cadigan is a renowned educator on this subject and the class was well received. While we obviously take ample time to train our members on all of the technological aspects of our trade, this type of training is of equal importance if our jobs are going to be run effectively. When it comes to appropriate behavior and the purposeful avoidance of any type of harassment or mistreatment from rearing its head, training and discussions makes sense for all the obvious reasons. We applaud every member who took the time to sit through this course.
