President John Sweeney addresses Labor lawyers'
conference in New Orleans... |
 |
"...We object to companies
that believe promises are made to be broken, that bankruptcy
is a strategy for executive self-enrichment. That $100 a day
is excessive pay for a laborer but $100 million a year
sounds like a reasonable annual salary for a CEO. We object
to companies that think dead coal miners are just another
cost of doing business whether those miners are in Sago,
West Virginia or Szechuan China. And we object to
politicians who act like money changers in the temple of our
republic, who feed the public on a diet of hatred and
bigotry with one hand while they pick our pockets with the
other, who persecute the immigrant and coddle the employer
who exploits her..." |

bringing together so many members from different areas will
undoubtedly make us a stronger council as we move forward...

Dr. Sullivan and

with a variety of situations in the appropriate manner when they

IMPACT brings Foreman
Training program to New England DC... |
IMPACT's nationally
renowned FOREMAN TRAINING PROGRAM is being put on for the
next three days for members of the New England District Council, as
well as for two brother members from New Jersey (Rich Sweeney
& Gary Brown of Local 399 in Camden, NJ) who took the time to
drive up and participate. As usual, instructors Dr. Rick Sullivan
of IMPACT's national office in Washington DC, and
Jimmy Creegan of Local 45 in Jersey City, New Jersey, are
putting on a first-class presentation, the emphasis of which is to
improve the skills of foremen in the field, as well as instructors,
so they may impart this new knowledge to the young members in our
ranks prospectively. The end goal is to make our signatory
companies more successful through the streamlining of field
operations. Thanks go out to all of the participants for making
this three full-day endeavor a successful one.

Dr. Sullivan and
Jim Creegan provided a steady stream of challenges to the
participants, all of whom are seasoned iron workers. Role playing
was constant, forcing the participants to put themselves in the
shoes of other people they encounter on a regular basis. Breaking
the larger single group into several smaller groups, and coupling
people together with people they don't know too well, if at all, is
a great learning experience designed to make our members and
contractors more productive.

ALSO: The LaChance name

wouldn't do it justice:
JH

FROM: Roy Coulombe
President - Local 37 Providence, RI
 |
Jay - One of
our oldest members Eddie LaChance Sr. (# 358990) died
Tuesday the 9th at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer.
He has 4 sons in the Local: David, Paul, Edward Jr.
and Russell. He truly was a local legend. Always
smiling but tough as nails, he never swore. He was famous
for saying "goll dang it" or "gee whizz" when he got mad.
Also won many jobsite bets when he would climb a column
holding a beater in both of his hands. He would only use his
feet in the web. Incredible strength. One complaint the men
had was where he spit his tobacco juice but they loved Eddie
so much they put up with it. He had no problem pulling a
warm beer from behind the seat of the truck if he got
thirsty. He was an avid fisherman. Eddie was inducted into
the Marines and sent to Paris Island in January of 1952, and
was honorably discharged in 1954 when he resumed
Ironworking. He was initiated into Local 37 in May of 1946
and is the last survivor of 8 brothers that were members
here in 37. In June of 1975, Eddie was seriously injured at
work when he fell from a ladder. The mishap permanently
disabled him at the age of 48 after 30 hard years in the
business. |
