The GOLIATH CRANE is coming down!
|
Thanks to LMCT Safety Director
Pat McDermott for forwarding pictures of Daniel Marr & Son
as they begin dismantling the GOLIATH CRANE. Built in the mid
70s, and billed as the second largest crane in the world at that
time, the Goliath Crane job employed over 100 of the finest iron
workers Local 7 had to offer. Pat made a recent trip down there (and
was attacked be a peregrine falcon - see center photo above). Top
left was a picture provided to me by Dennis Sheehan.
We will be doing a large story
about this job in the next COLUMN, but for now, enjoy the
pictures and take special note of the great graffiti that Pat
uncovered, ironically, much of which was done by his dad, "Arky"
McDermott, back when we were building it. ...

GLOBE questions labor's clout... |
Casino vote is a blow to labor
The BOSTON GLOBE reported the following today:
"...But the casino vote highlights the extent to which the labor
community is smaller, more fractured, and less influential in
electoral politics than it once was. It also highlights the limits
union power has on Beacon Hill...."
To read the entire story
JH
When members join the union but
fail to participate in the civic process that creates good paying
jobs, we leave ourselves open for criticism, and rightfully so.
152 State Representatives voted on the RESORT DESTINATION CASINO
legislation the other day.
108 of the 152 Representatives voted against organized labor's
wishes. They do not fear a backlash from our members because
the overwhelming majority of our members refuse to participate in
the fight.
If you called or E-mailed
your State Representative's office and voiced your displeasure with
his or her vote, things would be different. They run every two
years. They should be worried about the repercussions of this vote,
but they're convinced we will not fight back. This is
sad. Are you so busy that you cannot make a call or fire off an
email?

40 Hour Post Tensioning Class
continues at Local 7... |
 |
Thanks again to Eddie LeGrow and Bobby McKenzie
for teaching the 40 Hour Post Tensioning class at
Local 7. This set of pictures is of the next eight-hour class (see
posting from 3/17) as the students must show up
on five consecutive Saturdays (for 8 hours each Saturday) to become
Post Tension certified. These students are already highly qualified
ironworkers. That they take significant time out of five straight
Saturdays is testament to their staying on top of all relevant
industry changes and they should be applauded for their dedication
to our trade and to Local 7...

BERLIN STEEL restores Hanover Theater
in Worcester, MA... |
 |
Thanks to Carl Johnson of
Berlin Steel in CT for forwarding pictures of a
magnificent restoration job at the Hanover Theater in
Worcester, MA. Carl said
"Berlin's ironworkers
hung chandelier rigging, reconstructed stairs, installed a
three-story fire escape, and 1500 linear feet of brass railings.
Fabricated materials for this project were supplied by Pillar,
Berlin, and six other local shops. It was a massive coordination
effort with outstanding results." We can't argue with that
assessment as these pictures show...

Cape
Wind is proposing Americas first offshore wind farm on Horseshoe
Shoal in Nantucket Sound. Miles from the nearest shore, 130 wind
turbines will gracefully harness the wind to produce up to 420
megawatts of clean, renewable energy. In average winds, Cape Wind
will provide three quarters of the Cape and Islands electricity
needs.
Thanks to LU7's Fiore Grassetti
for forwarding this information. Mike Durant has designated
Fiore to compile all information pertinent to wind farms and wind
turbines in New England and to disseminate that information to the
applicable officers or local unions within the council. Any help
you can give Fiore (and Local 37, as much, if not all of Cape Wind's
present efforts are designated for their area) in this matter would
be greatly appreciated...
