Local 7
steps up again for Castle Island Sailing Program... |
 |
South Boston's Castle
Island Sailing Program
has been providing inner city kids with the opportunity to learn how
to sail for decades. Founded by legendary South Bostonian, the late
Harry McDonough,
the program is one of the area's bright spots when it comes to
summer entertainment for kids. Over the past few years, Southie's
Kevin Green,
(pictured above in white shirt), who now runs the program, has
reached out to Local 7 for their skills when it comes to repairing
various pieces of equipment that are vital for this program to
maintain its viability. As usual, Local 7's welding instructor
extraordinaire, Kevin Hart,
was right in the middle of everything when the gangway needed to be
redesigned, refabricated and welded. Thanks to
Kevin and the crew of Local 7 members who assisted him in getting
the program back on track.

NOTE: More
pictures will be coming as Local 7 will be putting the gangway back
in the water today. As always, once we receive them, we will post
them.

District
Council members and officers show up in Boston to show their
support for the Portsmouth Shipyard workers and Iron Workers
Local 745... |
 |
The Portsmouth Shipyard is one of the oldest and most productive
yards in the United States, yet it sits on the Government's hit list
for all the wrong reasons. The Bush appointed
military base restructuring committee has recommended that 58,000
jobs be cut nationwide. That same committee has proposed that 50% of
those cuts come from NEW ENGLAND - six states out of fifty, yet half
of the cuts come at our expense.
Conspiracy theorists would tend to believe that this is because the
New England community saw through Bush's anti-worker policies and
their drastic effect on middle-class America, and not a single state
in this region supported his candidacy. Bush and his cronies have no
problem seeing the finest shipyard in the country being shut down as
a result, a move that would result in our losing an entire local
union from our council (Local 745). Six states bear 50% of the
cuts...go figure!

Boston Iron Workers and
Boston Fire Fighters to team up under Homeland Security... |
 |
THE BOSTON HERALD is reporting that
"Union ironworkers will join
Boston firefighters at building collapses and other
structural disasters under a new agreement announced
yesterday. ``It's really a throwback to 9/11...,'' said
Boston Mayor
Thomas M. Menino, who touted the partnership as a
first of its kind in the country."
|
Many thanks go out to IMPACT Regional Director Bobby Banks
for pushing hard for this partnership. Many of our members count
Boston Fire Fighters as some of their closest friends and several of
our members are actually full-time fire fighters in addition to
working at our trade. In Washington DC, the Fire Fighters and Iron
Workers are among a small group of joint owners of the United Unions
Building at 1750 New York Avenue and our respective General
Presidents, Joe Hunt and
Harold Schaitberger of
the Fire Fighters are close friends, so this partnership has the
potential to be played out across the country.
