Local 7 Ironmen Motorcycle Club
Kimberly Ferrara Run

On Sunday, September 23, 2007, the last of our scheduled 2007 Local 7 Ironmen Motorcycle runs will be held. Thank you to all who participated in our previous runs, but as the saying goes, "We saved the best for last."

The Annual Kimberly Ferrara Motorcycle Run, is our #1 fund raiser. The run will begin at Local 7 at 9 AM were we will take a 30 mile ride to a place still to be designated, and then back to Local 7 where a great BBQ will be awaiting us along with good conversation and the camaraderie that is always present at events like this.

Kimberly Ferrara was the daughter of Local 7's Tom Broderick and his wife, Julie, and the wife of Local 7's Matt Ferrara. She was taken from us by cancer at a young age.

The run will help support the Dana Farber Hospital for Cancer Research. Last year, with your support, we were able to raise close to $10,000 which we donated to this worthy cause. Local 7 Ironworkers are proud of this accomplishment and look forward to making this year even more successful. We welcome friends of Local 7 along with family members.

For additional information, call: Charly Clifford781/626-2202 or Arny Krane @ 508/561-1649 JH

Neal McKelligan is looking to build up a database of members who may be interested in teaching apprentice school in the future. He wants names of prospective teachers in all disciplines (blueprints; miscellaneous metals; finish; structural; welding; rebar; etc). In the future, and perhaps even now in some instances, teachers are going to be needed in Boston, Worcester, Maine, and New Hampshire...

Welding instructors must have SMAW FCAW unlimited certifications.

Somebody took the time to teach you. Do you have time to teach the next generation? If so, you can get your name on the list be calling 617-268-0707...or e-mailing Neal (see below)...or simply by dropping by his office at Local 7 (2nd floor)...

Remembering former Local 496 President and head of the Local 496 Retirees Club in Maine LARRY CARR...

Thanks to John Evans for providing us with photos of LARRY CARR, former Local 496 President and the driving force behind the Local 496 Retirees Club.

When the revocation of Local 496's charter became necessary, I remember addressing a group of 496 members last fall and winter. I told them that while I thought it would be in their best interest in the way of work opportunities (which has proven to be true through the hard work of the new and enlarged contingent of Local 7's officers, most especially John Evans and Mike Durant), it hurt to see people like Larry Carr lose their identity and autonomy of a local union in which they took so much pride. Unsolicited, Larry made that meeting much easier for me by siding with my assessment and his word certainly carried a lot more clout than mine ever could. But, that was Larry. He epitomized what it meant to be a UNION iron worker...we take care of each other and, above all, WE STICK TOGETHER IN TIMES OF NEED. While the official record may reflect the fact that he died as a member of Local 7, he embodied the history and brotherhood of Iron Workers Local 496, let's make no mistake about that!

Attending Larry's Celebration of Life on Tuesday, August 21st, I had member after member tell me that he would be missed, but worse, that he was irreplaceable. Many in our ranks think they're irreplaceable, and there exists an alternate train of thought that nobody in life is irreplaceable. I respectfully submit that Larry is the exception to that alternate rule, as he strived to represent the tenets of what makes local unions a home and a family more than an organization. I, too, believe that he is irreplaceable. I know that he will be missed. Most importantly, I am proud and blessed to have known him. From the size of the contingent that showed up to "celebrate" Larry, I know I am not alone in these thoughts.

May you rest in peace, Larry. And may God bless your family and friends in your absence.  JH
