Worcester Courthouse
"tops-out" in front of large crowd

A huge crowd turned out to witness the skills and knowledge of our members first-hand when Structures Derek of Canada topped out the new Worcester Courthouse. The greatest part of the ceremony was the handmade sign that rode on the bottom of the other banners that read ONE UNION UNITED! The former Local 57 members from Worcester were recently merged into Local 7 and the signs says it all. These members did a terrific job erecting the steel and deserve accolades for the positive approach they brought to this project. Many Central Massachusetts dignitaries were there to celebrate our accomplishment and we wish to thank them for their support also. Congratulations are in order to every worker who played a part in bringing this job in.

Keeping the UNION LABEL
out of your company..
.
A small group of people are rewarded financially on a daily basis for taking part in the denial of collective bargaining for workers in almost every industry in our country. This small group may be highly successful in keeping the unions out, but are their financial windfalls in the best interest of the affected workers in the long run?
Of course not!

To read a WALL STREET JOURNAL story about the tactics of these ne'er-do-wells  Click here JH

NOTE: They must sleep well at night, huh? They screw workers (and, by virtue, their families) by taking huge sums of money from big business entities who, in turn, reap even larger sums of money as a result of denying these workers fair wages, benefits and working conditions. We then go out and purchase their products, which funds this vicious circle.  Someday, the workers in this country are finally going to wake up. I hope I'm alive to witness it.  JH

Too smart to get a physical?

That's not too smart!

NOTE: Reprinted from the BOSTON HERALD
Joe Fitzgerald
Column

Joe Fitzgerald of the BOSTON HERALD is one of the finest writers in the country. His poignant human interest stories are always interesting, but his column in today's Herald was an indictment on his own inability to get regular health checkups. After feeling less energetic than usual for over a year, he finally submitted to a physical and did not hear what he wanted to hear.

We have reprinted Joe's words in an effort to get our members to the doctor if they too have neglected to do so up until now. We have a terrific insurance plan in spite of the national disgrace surrounding health insurance. You need to take advantage of it as "An ounce of prevention is (still) worth a pound of cure." GET A CHECK-UP ASAP if you've been neglecting it!

Please also keep Joe Fitzgerald's future health, as well as the health of all our members and their family members, in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

Next time you lock your keys in the car, try this!

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone on your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home press the unlock button of your key fob (clicker), holding it near the phone on their end. Your car doors will unlock.

Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object you could be hundreds of miles away, and if you
can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk!).

We don't know if this works, but it brings to mind the (true) story about the Local 7 iron worker (who shall go unnamed) who told another iron worker (nicknamed Rotten), "Yeah, I got a spare set of keys," when he found himself locked out of his car. "Where are they?" said Rotten. "They're in the glove compartment." True story (Rotten would never lie!).

High Steel
The Daring Men Who Built The World's Greatest Skyline

Now available in paperback (far right cover)...

SYNOPSIS: Step out onto a narrow steel beam 800 feet in the air and join the rarest breed of workers you'll ever meet. From the violence-prone, half-mad "roughnecks" that built America's first steel bridges and buildings -- often dying in the process -- to the roaming Mohawks and "boomers" raising its skyscrapers today, they are the rogues and heroes, the anything-but-average Average Joes of High Steel.

For anyone who ever wondered about the origins of America's steel icons -- its suspension bridges, its skyscrapers -- here's the untold story ...this is a fast-paced, bare-knuckled portrait of vivid personalities, containing episodes of startling violence (as when ironworkers dynamited the Los Angeles Times building in 1910) and exhilarating adventure. In the end, High Steel is also a moving account of brotherhood and family. Many of those working in the trade today descend from multigenerational dynasties of ironworkers. As they walk steel, they follow in the footsteps of their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers. We've all had the experience of looking at a particularly awe-inspiring bridge or building and wondering, How did they do that? Jim Rasenberger asks -- and answers!

This is a fantastic book about present day ironworking as well as the history of our craft. JH
